How To Remove a Damaged Air Removal Radiator Valve (a.k.a. Steam Vent Valve)

February 24, 2014 By BobsPlumbingVideos Leave a Comment

I did video on “How To Remove a Steam Valve” part 1 and part 2 where I illustrate the steps in removing a steam valve that’s been in service for as much as sixty years. In this short video I walk you thru the steps in removing the male end of a steam air vent valve that often breaks off inside the radiator. You innocently go to install a new air valve on your steam radiator and the next thing you know is the valve breaks off inside the radiator. Now what do you do?

Well you basically have two choices, get yourself a 1/8″ nipple extractor a.k.a. easy out and proceed in removing the broken piece as I illustrate in the video. The problem is that unlike a broken piece of pipe, the piece in the radiator is a very thin wall brass and it doesn’t have enough thickness for the extractor to grab. The result is that the extractor will start to bind and distort the inside of the radiator. When this happens I jump to plan b. which is to get an 11/32″ high speed drill bit and drill out the broken piece. Now it’s time to get a 1/8″ n.p.t. pipe tap and cut new female threads into the radiator. Start slow and straight using either an adjustable or open end wrench a little WD-40 or cutting oil and work the pipe tap back and forth until you’ve cut in the new threads.

You’re now ready to install the new air valve and in general I just use my pipe joint compound (Mega-Lock) which is a Teflon fortified pipe joint compound. I very rarely use Teflon tape on air valves (doesn’t look good), but you most certainly can. One last mention is that I referenced “international pipe threads” when mentioning the pipe tap, I stand corrected and the proper designation is “national pipe thread”. Well I hope I solved the mystery of how to remove that broken air valve and if I wasn’t clear, please drop me an e-mail at info@bobsplumbingvideos.com.

Thanks for dropping by, HAPPY PLUMBING!

How To Replace A Generic Tub & Shower Cartridge. Part 2

February 11, 2014 By BobsPlumbingVideos Leave a Comment

This is part 2 of my 2 part series called “How To Replace A Generic Tub & Shower Cartridge”.

If you haven’t seen How To Replace A Generic Tub & Shower Cartridge part 1, check that out first.

As you can see, the process is pretty straight forward and as a rule these cartridges are easily removed by pulling back on the center brass stem.

The cartridge itself is made up of a few individual components which are replaceable, but based on my past experience I found it more cost effective to replace the entire cartridge.

When Installing the new unit I always lubricate any “O” rings with my silicone lubricant which will aid in removing the cartridge if any repairs have to be made in the future.

Now it’s just a matter of re-installing the trim and you should be good to go. If you have a question about this or any of the videos on this website please drop me a line at info@bobsplumbingvideos.com, I’d love to hear from you.

Until next time…
HAPPY PLUMBING!

How To Replace A Generic Tub & Shower Cartridge. Part 1

February 11, 2014 By BobsPlumbingVideos Leave a Comment

This is part 1 of my 2 part series called “How To Replace A Generic Tub & Shower Cartridge”.

In this video I walk you through the steps on how to remove a generic ceramic tub or shower cartridge.

This tub and shower faucet combo is made by Wolverine Brass which manufactures plumbing specialties to plumbing professionals. They are not for purchase over the counter but they use a cartridge similar in design to the ones used by other manufacturers.

This is a competitively priced fitting that I Install frequently and like the fact that it’s equipped with integral shut-off valves. If I ever have to make a repair on this fitting, it’s not necessary to shut off the water supply to the home making it very convenient especially if I’m working in a multifamily building.

No need to inconvenience the other families with a building shut down. With the exception of physical trim, the steps to remove and replace the cartridge are basic so check out the video and I’ll catch up with you in How To Replace A Generic Tub & Shower Cartridge – Part 2.

Happy Plumbing!

More Things To Consider When Hiring a Plumber!

December 31, 2013 By BobsPlumbingVideos Leave a Comment

Multiple PlumbersIn a previous article I pointed out some of the most common mistakes made when hiring a plumber. But how do you really know if you’ve found a great plumber? Here are a few more things to consider to help you in the decision making process.

EMERGENCY SERVICE: The last thing you want to hear when that emergency happens is an answering machine. Top rated plumbers make sure a live person answers their phones at all times.Whether an answering service or an in house customer service rep., having a human being on the line in times of an emergency is mandatory. Bear in mind that even a great plumber may not be able to drop what he’s doing to get to you. But by returning your call in a timely manner and giving you periodic updates as to his E.T.A., the stress factor can be greatly reduced. A two to four hour window is not unreasonable.

LICENSING: Any plumber your considering should be licensed by the state in which he or she practices and hold mandatory workers compensation and liability insurances. If you’re in New York City where I’m located, you can go here to check the status of the plumber your considering hiring. Check if your plumbers license is current – click here. Now just because someone is licensed, it’s no guarantee that they’re a great plumber. Again this is where you should ask questions such as how long have you been in business?, as well as at least three references with contact phone numbers and or e-mail address’s so you can perform your due diligence. Just because someone has a drivers license, that doesn’t necessarily make them a good driver.

PRICING: As far as I’m concerned, a Flat Rate / Upfront Pricing system is the only way to go. You’ll know exactly what the cost will be before the job begins. You should expect your plumber to offer several options that fits different budgets. To avoid any miscommunication you should always ask what scenario would cause the quoted Flat Rate Price to change and how the additional charges if any are handled. In general most plumbing projects are not cheap, so constant communication between you and your plumber are key!

CUSTOMER SERVICE: A good plumber will make a follow up phone call the same day he performs his service. In addition a follow up thank you card a few days later thanking you for your business tells me they’re grateful to have your business. Most great plumbers will provided you with a 100% satisfaction guarantee and do whatever it takes to win your business. That should include priority service for V.I.P. clients and iron clad money back guarantees.

PERFORMANCE: A great plumber is all about providing health and safety for his clients and strive to keep them safe from leaks, fumes and maintaining a safe job-site free of any potential hazards. Performance should also include good communication by explaining what he’s doing and keeping you informed of any changes or problems that can surface through the scope of his work. Neatness counts too, work areas should be kept clean and free of tools and debris, in addition protective floor covering and shoe covers are key in protecting those hardwood and carpeted floors.

When you think you’ve found your dream plumber, be flexible! He’s busy and unless you have a true emergency, try to work with him and not pressure him. That makes you a great customer and one that a great plumber will go out of his way to satisfy!
